Cranes on Parade 4 - Mounting Braces and Installation Hardware
Cranes on Parade 4 will create a permanent collection of 100 artist-designed aluminum Sandhill Crane sculptures installed on City of Kearney light poles throughout the community. The project will beautify Kearney's business districts, celebrate the community's identity as the "Sandhill Crane Capital of the World", support local artists, strengthen community pride, and provide a lasting point of interest for residents and visitors.
The Kearney Dawn Rotary Club is requesting grant funding for the materials needed for the fabrication of mounting braces, straps, and hardware required to safely secure the 100 aluminum crane sculptures to City of Kearney light poles.
Each crane will require two aluminum sign framing channels (braces) affixed to the back of the aluminum crane. A 38"x1" brace will be attached diagonally across the middle-reverse of the crane using six compression rivets. A second 16"x1" horizontal brace will be attached horizontally across the bottom-reverse of the crane using two compression rivets.
An aluminum mounting strap, similar in design to a heavy-duty cable tie, will be secured around the light pole in 2 positions. The crane and its attached braces will then be connected to the mounting strap using two 1-inch bolts. This mounting system will provide the structural support needed to securely install each pair of cranes while minimizing alterations to the City-owned light poles.
Grant funds will be used for the fabrication and purchase of:
48 - 12' strips, Aluminum Sign Framing Channels (Braces) measuring 54"x1" per crane
3 100' rolls, Adjustable Post Straps & Flare Brackets (100' roll)
3 boxes, 3/8" compression rivets (box of 100)
4 boxes, 1/2" stainless hex cap 1-1/2" threaded bolts (box 50)
2 boxes, 1/2" stainless nylon locking nuts (box 100)
2 boxes, 1/4" x 5/8" x 0.045 Flat Washers box 100)

The grant request does NOT include labor costs. The Kearney Dawn Rotary Club will separately pay for the labor required to attach the braces to the aluminum cranes and prepare the mounting assemblies.
The City of Kearney will install the completed crane sculptures on designated light poles in January 2027. Providing a consistent, professionally fabricated mounting system for all 100 sculptures is essential to the safe and successful completion of the project.
The mounting equipment funded through this grant will become a permanent structural component of the Cranes on Parade 4 installations. Unlike temporary promotional materials, these braces, straps, and fasteners are necessary physical infrastructure that will allow the artwork to be securely displayed throughout Kearney for many years.
By funding the mounting hardware, the grant will directly support the installation of a permanent community asset that promotes public art, celebrates Kearney's natural heritage, supports local artists, and enhances the appearance and character of the community.
