Camp RYLA Youth Leadership Sponsorship Expansion
The Rotary Club of McKinney is requesting a Rotary District 5810 Matching Grant to expand our sponsorship of students attending Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) from four students to six students. Funding this grant will allow our club to provide two additional leadership scholarships to outstanding local high school juniors who have demonstrated exceptional leadership potential, character, and a commitment to serving others.
Community Need
The Rotary Club of McKinney has a long-standing commitment to developing future community leaders through Rotary's youth programs. Each year, we partner with McKinney-area high schools to identify students who have demonstrated leadership in academics, extracurricular activities, athletics, fine arts, student organizations, and community service.
The need consistently exceeds our available funding. Every year, more qualified students are nominated than our club can sponsor, forcing difficult decisions despite the exceptional quality of the applicants. By increasing our sponsorship from four to six students, we can provide this life-changing leadership opportunity to two additional students who might otherwise be unable to attend.
Camp RYLA equips students with leadership skills that cannot be fully developed in a traditional classroom. Through experiential learning, team-building activities, leadership challenges, and mentorship, participants gain confidence, improve communication skills, strengthen ethical decision-making, and develop a lifelong commitment to service. Students return to their schools inspired to lead organizations, mentor peers, and become active contributors within their communities.
How the Project Will Meet the Need
This project directly addresses the growing demand for youth leadership opportunities by expanding access to Camp RYLA for deserving McKinney students.
Grant funding will provide scholarships for two additional participants, increasing our total sponsorship to six students. These scholarships remove financial barriers while allowing the Rotary Club of McKinney to invest in young leaders who have the potential to make lasting contributions to their schools and community.
Students attending Camp RYLA return with:

Use of Grant Funds
District 5810 Matching Grant funds will be used exclusively to sponsor the attendance of two additional students at Camp RYLA.
Funding will cover the registration costs associated with participation, including:
• Camp tuition
• Leadership programming
• Educational materials
• Lodging
• Transportation
• Meals
• Organized leadership activities
• Camp operations
Every dollar awarded will directly support student participation in this nationally recognized Rotary leadership program.
Rotary Club of McKinney Member Involvement
Rotary Club of McKinney members are actively engaged throughout every phase of the project.
Club members will:
• Coordinate with counselors and administrators at McKinney-area high schools to promote Camp RYLA.
• Review student nominations and applications.
• Interview applicants and select scholarship recipients.
• Communicate with students and parents throughout the registration process.
• Assist with pre-camp orientation and preparation.
• Drive the students to and from camp.
• Celebrate and recognize the students before their departure.
• Invite participants to present their Camp RYLA experiences at a Rotary Club meeting after camp.
• Encourage graduates to remain engaged through Interact, Rotaract, community service projects, and future Rotary leadership opportunities.
These activities create meaningful mentoring relationships between Rotarians and the next generation of community leaders while strengthening Rotary's visibility and impact within McKinney.

January-February
• Promote Camp RYLA through McKinney ISD and local private schools.

February-March
• Review applications.

• Students attend Camp RYLA.

• Students report on their experiences during a Rotary Club of McKinney meeting.
• Club members encourage ongoing leadership development and community service through Rotary youth programs and volunteer opportunities.
Expected Outcomes
The Rotary Club of McKinney expects this project to:
• Increase student participation in Camp RYLA by 50%, from four to six sponsored students.
• Expand leadership opportunities for deserving McKinney-area youth.
• Develop future ethical leaders committed to "Service Above Self."
• Strengthen partnerships between Rotary and local schools.
• Inspire greater youth involvement in volunteerism and civic leadership.
• Build a pipeline of future Interact, Rotaract, and Rotary members.
By investing in two additional Camp RYLA scholarships, the Rotary Club of McKinney will continue its tradition of empowering young leaders whose positive influence will benefit McKinney and surrounding communities for years to come.
