The Hermanitas Mentoring Program was established in Carlsbad schools 17 years ago by the nonprofit organization MANA de North County. It is designed to mentor Latina teen girls who plan to attend college and the services are presented to cohorts of girls at specific high schools in Carlsbad, Oceanside and other school districts. Over the years they have found that selecting a college student who graduated from their mentoring program in that district are the most effective mentors -- they come from the same neighborhoods and are also first generation college students and they know the curriculum used. The curriculum is designed to bring the girls to college, a successful career and a healthy lifestyle.
This grant proposes to give each of 3 college students a $500. stipend for mentoring a cohort of high schoolers in person once a week and communicating with the mentees during the week via GroupMe and texts.
