Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Colombia

Location: Villavicencio

Total Budget: $31,197

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:

Establish a tutoring and educational support center for elementary school children in the El Morichal neighborhood. Improve the classroom facilities and restrooms of the El Morichal community center. Provide furniture and equipment for a reading and academic tutoring room. Develop academic tutoring activities, reading promotion programs, and cultural activities twice a week in this space, THE CORNER OF KNOWLEDGE, in partnership with Fundetec, an institution dedicated to the educational training of young people in technical programs.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:

Our project aims to provide an academic and recreational space for elementary school children in the El Morichal neighborhood to participate in activities that foster their interest in reading, strengthen their math skills, and improve their academic performance, as well as make productive use of their free time outside of school hours. The first step of this project is to carry out improvements and maintenance on the Community Center's classroom facilities to ensure they meet the necessary safety and hygiene standards for activities with children. For this purpose, resources obtained through the grant will be used, and a labor contract will be awarded to skilled tradespeople, preferably residents of the community.

The second step of the plan is to equip a classroom at the El Morichal Community Center with a library for children aged 5-14, an academic and recreational workspace, teaching materials, as well as a computer, printer, and projector for the use of digital tools and printed resources.

The third step is to begin activities through an agreement with FUNDETEC, a technical training institution with the experience and qualified personnel to conduct training and academic support activities twice a week for three hours each session. This will begin during the initial 12-month duration of the project, with a commitment to continue this work in subsequent years.

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHAT NEEDS YOU IDENTIFIED? HOW WILL THE PROJECT ADDRESS THESE NEEDS? WHO WILL BENEFICIARY OF THIS PROJECT? MENTION AN ESTIMATED NUMBER OF BENEFICIARIES.

The El Morichal neighborhood is located in the city of Villavicencio, in Commune 4. The community is made up of displaced, migrant, and working families, belonging to socioeconomic stratum 1. It is a vulnerable community that requires the support of our organization to protect children from a potentially harmful environment due to factors such as drug addiction and crime.

Through surveys conducted at a community meeting, the community identified the most pressing needs: support for the constructive use of free time for children and access to academic support for school-aged children.

The project will address these needs by creating a space, THE CORNER OF KNOWLEDGE, to develop academic and recreational activities that allow school-aged children to make good use of their free time. This will help protect them from exposure to the drug addiction and crime present in the neighbourhood.

The beneficiaries will be children from the El Morichal neighborhood in the city of Villavicencio who are enrolled in primary school. A total of 40 children from the community. The direct beneficiaries will be the children of the community, approximately 40 children, an estimate based on the current attendance of children to the activities that the Villavicencio Rotary Club has been carrying out weekly at the Community Center, and the indirect beneficiaries will be the parents and grandparents of these children, who will have the assurance that their children are protected during the time in activities that are beneficial for their development.

SUSTAINABILITY: (explain how the project will continue to operate once the financial support you receive for this project ends)

The EL RINCON DEL SABER project will be carried out in partnership with the FUNDETEC Foundation, which has extensive experience in developing educational activities and offers a training program for Education Assistants. They will continue to offer this program in subsequent years, as it also provides them with a training and practical opportunity for their students.

IS THE COMMUNITY INVOLVED? DESCRIBE THE ROLE OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY IN THE IMPLEMENTATION AND CONTINUITY OF THE PROJECT. If the community is involved, people have been informed at community meetings, work is being done hand in hand with the community action board and other community leaders, people from the neighborhood will be involved in the purchase of supplies and contracts for work carried out to make improvements to the facilities
