Project Description Region: Africa Country: Zimbabwe Location: Bulawayo Total Budget: $52,866 Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo has medical personnel who have specialized in care of patients with esophageal disorders however they do not have the requisite machines to give comprehensive care and improve patient outcomes. The project is set to improve the dysphagia score of patients with advanced esophageal cancer and early diagnosis of patients with GIT disorders by donation of an Endoscopy machine. The aim of this project is to continue assisting esophageal cancer patients with an effective timeous palliative care option via a less invasive procedure than currently available. Stenting will improve quality of life and thus promote well-being for these patients that are carrying life-threatening illnesses. The project also aims to improve the skill level of clinicians attending to esophageal cancer patients at Mpilo , their decision-making matrix and improve the quality of care being given to similar patients in the region thus assisting patients who otherwise would deteriorate or get suboptimal staging due to lack of the essential equipment and technical knowledge. Mpilo hospital suffers a disadvantage in terms of manpower and resources. Patients that get treated at Mpilo are somewhat at a disadvantage in terms of available facilities and treatment options, additionally specialists that train at Mpilo are disadvantaged as the hospital does not have a functional endoscopy machine because of missing components which were not replaced or bought due to economic challenges. Beneficiaries are patients with confirmed or suspected esophageal cancer additionally all patients requiring diagnostic endoscopes will be served by the same machine.
