The primary purpose of this grant is to open a healthcare clinic in an underserved indigenous area of Mexico where Kidney disease, Diabetes, High blood pressure and heart disease, cancer and poor diets are prevalent.

A medical building that had housed a private practice became available under indigenous law and was returned to the native owner. The community asked the Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club to help restore and reopen the facility.

The State of Jalisco Secretary of Health for Region IV knew the need and immediately saw the potential for the building and offered to staff with 3 GP doctors, nurses, a psychologist, nutritionist and a Dentist. The population in the surrounding villages that will benefit from the clinic is 14,000.

Step 10: Sustainability

Humanitarian Projects - Project Planning

Describe the community needs that your project will address.

These are indigenous communities along the shore of Lake Chapala. The Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club has worked in this area for the for the past 9 years and we are very aware of the health conditions in these villages.

Chronic Kidney disease in the 20 - 35 year old residents, Diabetes, malnutrition, Hyper-tension, Heart disease, genetically transmitted diseases and psychological issues as well as wide spread communicable ailments.

How did your project team identify these needs.

Observation and participation in trying to get medical services to the very needy residents. Plus the confirmation by the state health team that all these needs exceed the capability of the local healthcare staff that is present.

How were members of the benefiting community involved in finding solutions.

The community is very aware of the assistance Rotary has provided in the local area and came to the Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club seeking our support to re-open a clinic in the La Cuesta community.

How were community members involved in planning the project.

Every local official, at all levels of government, met us on the first tour of the facility. They had held a raffle to raise money to buy cleaning supplies and were making an effort to patch the leaking roof. The legal representative for Poncitlán had met with the indigenous land owner and verified that indigenous law prevailed and the land was rightfully returned to the owner and that a new land use agreement was possible.
