Project Description Country: USA Location: San Diego Total Budget: $2,000 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: General Summary: Grant will support the participation of the Poway and Scripps Ranch High Schools in The National Mock Trial Competition Mastering our Judicial system and process is a skill and knowledge based task that, when available, is beneficial to start experiencing early for those seeking the practice of Law. The Mock Trial Program is a country - wide program that allows high school students to learn and participate in a trial. The students participate as attorneys, witnesses, bailliff and clerk on both Prosecutor/Plaintiff or Defense positions. San Diego Judges and Lawyers judge and score the teams in courthouse down town in the evenings. Students are enhanced in their ability to think critically, communicate effectively and work as a team, as well as what it takes to work with the legal professionals in the Judicial System to understand the Constitution and the Bill of Rights critical to justice in our country and ultimately the world. Currently there are over 29 High Schools in our county that participate in this competitive program. From that competition, one team participates in the California State Mock Trial Competition and the winner of the competition competes at the National Level. It is our intention to support our local participating High Schools from Poway and Scripps Ranch in aspects of entrance and provide support as well as providing member Rotarian Lawyers as voluntary participation coaches. Over the years the cost for participation have risen and we feel that providing funds that aid and ease their fundraising time will allow them to focus on better learning the skills needed for the trial competition. In the past, these factors have led to our High School participants not only going to finals but also witness the influence and input that Rotarians provide in service as members of the team. This in the hopes that they will also look to encourage and include Rotary as part of their civuc service life.
