Rotary Club: Escondido After Five

Project Title: Youth Mentoring Program


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Over the past year, Escondido Rotary After 5 has worked with Orange Glen High School and Outdoor Leadership for Youth to provide leadership activities and mentoring for at-risk students at Orange Glen High School. The program focused on students who had below a 1.5 GPA, 14 or more absences the previous year, and were 30 or more graduation credits behind. Students were screened for participation and were invited on 13 outdoor events, including hiking, kayaking, camping, mountain biking, rock climbing and deep sea fishing. Two Rotarians from the club participated in all activities, providing safety, mentoring, and encouragement for participants.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians participated in the outdoor activities as mentors and guides. Although the activities were professionally led and also had leadership components, the Rotarians provided additional support.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Outdoor Leadership for Youth arranged and provided leadership, permits, and guides for all activities. Outdoor Leadership for Youth also provided all equipment and led activities.
