PROPOSAL ON SOLAR-POWERED BOREHOLE WATER PROJECT
Nado-Enterit Primary and Junior Secondary School
Isinya, Kenya
1. Background
The Rotary Club of Lavington Jioni is implementing a humanitarian project to provide sustainable access to clean water at Nado-Enterit Primary and Junior Secondary School in Isinya, Kajiado County, Kenya. The project focuses on installing a solar-powered borehole system to address critical water shortages affecting the school and surrounding community. The intervention aligns with Rotaryâs Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) focus area and aims to improve health, sanitation, and learning conditions.
2. History of the School
Nado-Enterit Primary and Junior Secondary School serves:
- 406 students
- 17 teachers
- 2 non-teaching staff
The school has an existing borehole drilled over 15 years ago, but it lacks proper documentation and has deteriorated over time. Due to surrounding developments and deeper boreholes in the area, the existing boreholeâs performance has declined significantly.
3. Problem Statement
The school currently lacks a reliable and sustainable water source. It depends on purchased water deliveries and intermittent access to a nearby borehole. This results in frequent water shortages, poor hygiene and sanitation conditions, disruption of school operations and feeding programs, increased risk of water-related illnesses, and reduced student attendance and overall well-being. Additionally, lack of electricity at the borehole site has worsened water access challenges.
4. Proposal Objectives
a). Provide reliable access to clean and safe water
b). Improve sanitation and hygiene conditions
c). Reduce water-related illnesses
d). Strengthen community resilience to drought
e). Support school feeding programs and agriculture
5. Project Activities
Key activities include:
a). Hydrogeological assessment
b). Borehole drilling/rehabilitation and casing
c). Installation of a solar-powered pumping system
d). Construction of water storage and distribution infrastructure
e). Replacement of pipes and installation of accessories
f). Training on system operation, maintenance, and hygiene practices
6. Implementation
The project will be implemented by the Rotary Club of Lavington Jioni (Host Sponsor) and an International Rotary partner (to be confirmed). Roles include:
- Fund management and procurement
- Contractor selection through competitive bidding
- Project supervision and coordination
- Monitoring and reporting
The School Management Committee will support implementation and take ownership of ongoing operations.
7. Time Frame
Project Start: March 2026
Project Completion: June 2026

- Assessment: 2 weeks
- Installation & construction: 7 weeks
- Training & commissioning: 1 week
8. Expected Results / Output
The project is expected to achieve:
a). Improved access to safe water for 425+ beneficiaries
b). Reduced frequency of water shortages
c). Improved sanitation for 406 students
d). Better student health and attendance
e). Increased resilience to drought conditions
f). Access to water for nearby households and institutions
9. Budget
Total Estimated Budget is approximately USD 30,000 (KES 3,900,000).
10. Monitoring and Evaluation
Monitoring will be conducted by Rotary Club of Lavington Jioni, and the Nado-Enterit School Management Committee. The key indicators are:
- Number of people with improved access to water
- Reduction in water shortage days
- Number of students benefiting from improved sanitation
Data sources will include school records, health and attendance reports, and site visits and periodic monitoring reports.
11. Sustainability Plan
Sustainability will be ensured through:
a). Technical Sustainability
(i) Solar-powered system reduces operational costs
(ii) Local availability of spare parts and technicians
b). Institutional Sustainability
(i) Managed by School Management Committee
(ii) Designated personnel for maintenance
c). Financial Sustainability
(i) Funding from parents' contributions
(ii) Funding from the school's operational budget
(iii) Community support
d). Capacity Building
(i) Training on maintenance, water management, and hygiene
(ii) Ownership of all infrastructure will remain with the school.

This project addresses a critical and urgent need for reliable water access at Nado-Enterit School.
