Project Description: Foundation for the Future: Classroom Renovation and Modernization

Identified Needs:

Karakuta Comprehensive School, serving over 400 learners in Juja Sub-County, Kiambu County, faces numerous challenges due to its deteriorating infrastructure. Critical needs have been identified as follows:

1. Structural Risks: The current buildings have cracked walls and weakened structures that threaten the safety of students and staff.

2. Health Hazards: Dusty floors and poor ventilation contribute to respiratory issues among students, affecting their health and learning ability.

3. Climate Vulnerability: Leaking roofs disrupt learning during rainy seasons, forcing students to deal with uncomfortable and unsafe conditions.

4. Poor Learning Environment: Outdated and unattractive classrooms fail to engage students, leading to decreased academic performance.

5. Lack of Inclusivity: The school lacks infrastructure to support learners with disabilities, hindering equal educational opportunities.

6. Security Concerns: Absence of proper fencing and controlled access raises safety issues within the school environment.

How the Project Will Meet These Needs:

The "Foundation for the Future" project aims to transform Karakuta Comprehensive School into a modern, safe, and inclusive educational institution through comprehensive renovations and upgrades. The project will:

- Upgrade the school’s infrastructure, including structural repairs, modern furniture installation, and enhanced security measures.

- Create clean and conducive learning environments by renovating classrooms.

- Implement green solutions such as water harvesting and tree planting.

- Ensure accessibility for learners with disabilities, fostering inclusivity.

- Integrate digital infrastructure to prepare students for a technology-driven world.

Timeline for the Project:

The project will be executed in five phases over a period of 12 to 18 months:

1. Phase 1: Structural Repairs (3 months) - Focus on wall reinforcement and roof sealing.

2. Phase 2: Internal Finishes (2 months) - Flooring, plastering, and ceiling installation.

3. Phase 3: Fixtures & Fittings (3 months) - Painting, window installations, and ergonomic desk setup.

4. Phase 4: Security & Environment (2 months) - Installation of fencing, gates, and landscaping.

5. Phase 5: Modernization (2-3 months) - Establishment of an ICT lab, solar power installation, and water harvesting systems.

Project Funds Utilization:

With a total budget of KES 6,036,370 (~USD 47,000), the funds will be allocated as follows:

- Classroom Renovations: KES 4,691,370 for roofing, flooring, and structural improvements.

- Improvements: KES 1,345,000 for modern furniture, fencing, ICT lab setup, and environmental enhancements.

These funds will cover essential areas such as roofing repairs, installation of ergonomic furniture, and infrastructure for digital readiness, ensuring that the school meets modern educational standards.

Club Members’ Involvement:

Members of the Rotary Club of Juja will play a vital role in the project through various initiatives, including:

- Fundraising Activities: Organizing events to raise additional funds from the community and potential partners.

- Volunteer Work: Engaging actively in the renovation phases by offering hands-on support, from construction oversight to community mobilization.

- Building Partnerships: Facilitating collaborations with local businesses, government representatives, and international Rotary clubs to secure sponsorship and expertise.

Through collective efforts, club members will help promote community pride and ownership of the project, ensuring its sustainability and long-term impact. The involvement of club members will not only foster a sense of community but also empower them to contribute to the development of local educational infrastructure.
