Strengthening Diagnostic and Pain Management Services for Disease Prevention and Treatment

Introduction

The District Hospital is a 905-bedded tertiary care government hospital catering to patients from 8â€"10 neighboring districts. It serves as a major referral center for secondary and tertiary care services. On an average, the hospital manages 650â€"700 inpatients and 1,200â€"1,500 outpatients daily, reflecting a high patient load and critical public health responsibility.

The hospital predominantly serves rural and economically disadvantaged populations who depend entirely on public healthcare services.

Existing Services and Community Need

Under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme, the hospital conducts chest X-ray screening using Artificial Intelligence for early detection of tuberculosis. Early diagnosis through high-quality imaging plays a vital role in preventing disease transmission and initiating timely treatment.

However, the existing radiology infrastructure is insufficient to meet the increasing diagnostic demand, resulting in delays and suboptimal workflow. There is a strong need for advanced digital imaging to support national disease prevention initiatives.

In addition, a large number of postoperative patients and patients suffering from cancer-related pain require effective pain management. Limited access to ultrasound-guided pain interventions affects the quality of postoperative recovery and palliative care services.

Project Proposal

The proposed Global Grant project aims to strengthen diagnostic and pain management services through procurement and installation of the following equipment:

1. 500 mA Digital X-ray Machine with DR System

Includes printer and PACS system with unlimited modalities and users

To be installed in the Radiology Department

2. Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Machine

For ultrasound-guided postoperative pain relief

For palliative pain management in patients suffering from cancer

Expected Outcomes

Improved image quality and faster reporting through digital radiography

Enhanced AI-supported TB screening and early disease detection

Reduced patient waiting time and repeat imaging

Safe and effective ultrasound-guided pain interventions

Improved quality of life for postoperative and cancer patients

Reduced dependence on systemic analgesics and opioids

Area of Focus: Disease Prevention and Treatment

This project directly aligns with Rotary’s Disease Prevention and Treatment area of focus by:

Enabling early diagnosis of tuberculosis and other diseases

Supporting national public health programmes

Improving access to quality diagnostic and pain management services

Reducing disease burden and improving patient outcomes

Beneficiaries

Direct beneficiaries:

1,200â€"1,500 outpatients and 650â€"700 inpatients treated daily

Indirect beneficiaries:

Communities from multiple districts through improved disease control and palliative care services

Sustainability

The equipment will be installed in a government-run tertiary care hospital with:Trained radiologists, anesthesiologists, and technicians

Regular utilization under national health programmes

Maintenance and operational support through hospital systems

This ensures long-term sustainability beyond the grant period.

Conclusion

The proposed Global Grant project will significantly strengthen diagnostic capacity and pain management services at the District Hospital. By integrating advanced digital radiography and point-of-care ultrasound, the project will contribute meaningfully to disease prevention, early treatment, and improved quality of life for underserved populations.
