Access to safe and affordable surgery remains one of the greatest healthcare challenges facing underserved communities across Kenya and the East African region. Thousands of patients continue to suffer from preventable disabilities, blindness, untreated tumors, fistula injuries, neurological conditions, and life-threatening surgical complications due to poverty, limited specialist availability, and long referral distances.
Over the past three years, the Rotary Club of Nairobi Magharibi, in partnership with the Surgical Society of Kenya (SSK), Kenya Society for the Blind (KSB), county governments and volunteer specialists, has implemented highly successful multidisciplinary surgical camps across Kenya.
Since 2023, the program has delivered over 1,048 free surgeries across Narok, Makueni and Homa Bay counties, restoring lives and protecting vulnerable families from catastrophic medical poverty.
Surgical Camp Impact to Date
Year County Surgeries Done
2023 Narok 281
2024 Makueni 511
2025 Homa Bay 256
Total 1,048
The camps have introduced advanced procedures including Neurosurgery, Vascular surgery, Cataract and glaucoma surgery, Laparoscopic surgery, Endoscopy, Obstetric fistula repair, Major abdominal surgery.
The initiative has also strengthened county referral systems, trained healthcare workers, and established sustainable specialist mentorship networks.
Recognising the transformative impact of this program, Rotary District 9216 has officially selected the Surgical Access & Capacity Building Program as a District Legacy Project.
The project is anchored on the 5-Year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Rotary Club of Nairobi Magharibi, the Surgical Society of Kenya and the Kenya Society for the Blind to conduct free specialised surgeries and medical outreach programs across underserved regions.
Under this partnership model, the volunteer specialist teams donate their professional services while Rotary mobilises resources for:
⢠Specialist accommodation
⢠Meals
⢠Ground transport
⢠Camp logistics
⢠Community screening
⢠Patient coordination
⢠Training facilitation
This significantly reduces operational costs while maximizing medical impact and sustainability.
