Project Description

Region: North America

Country: Mexico

Location: Ensenada, Baja CA

Total Budget: $50,000

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) spread by brown dog ticks is an often fatal infection caused by Rickettsia bacteria. Between 2019 and 2024 almost 400 confirmed cases were reported in Baja California with a mortality rate of 35%. Ensenada has experienced 21 RMSF deaths in 2025-26. Most RMSF cases occur among children in poor communities with many stray dogs. Prevention of RMSF involves the community-wide use of long acting tick-killing collars on dogs and spraying insecticides. The grant will provide the collars in high risk communities in Ensenada. The timeline for the project is September 2026 through 2027. Rotary club members will actively assist the Baja California health department in distributing collars and education the community about RMSF prevention.

DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
