Project Summary
Nava Prativa Secondary School, located in Panchkhal Municipalityâ"06 of Kavrepalanchok District, serves 308 students, including 185 girls and 123 boys. The school's existing six toilet units were severely damaged during the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake. Although the classroom buildings have been reconstructed, the damaged toilets remain in use. These structures have large cracks and continue to carry the Red Sticker issued by Nepal's National Reconstruction Authority, indicating that they are unsafe for occupancy.
The continued use of these unsafe toilets poses a serious risk to students and staff while also contributing to poor sanitation, inadequate menstrual hygiene management, and increased health risks. This project seeks to replace the unsafe facilities with new WHO-standard, earthquake-resistant, child-friendly, gender-sensitive, and disability-accessible toilets, creating a safe and healthy learning environment for all students.
Needs Identified
A joint assessment conducted by the School Management Committee, teachers, parents, and community representatives identified the following critical needs:
Six existing toilets are structurally unsafe and remain in use despite being declared unsafe after the 2015 earthquake.
Students face daily safety risks while using cracked toilet buildings.
There are insufficient sanitation facilities for the current student population.
Adolescent girls lack adequate privacy and menstrual hygiene management facilities.
Existing toilets do not meet WHO/UNICEF WASH in Schools standards.
There are inadequate handwashing facilities and poor accessibility for children with disabilities.
Without immediate intervention, the health, dignity, and safety of more than 300 students will continue to be compromised.
Project Objectives
The project aims to:
Demolish the unsafe earthquake-damaged toilet structures.
Construct new earthquake-resistant WHO-standard toilet facilities.
Provide separate toilet blocks for girls and boys.
Construct a dedicated toilet for teachers.
Include an accessible toilet for students with disabilities.
Install handwashing stations with a reliable water supply.
Provide a Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) room with an incinerator for safe disposal of sanitary pads.
Promote hygiene education among students and teachers.
How the Project Will Meet the Identified Needs
The project will directly eliminate the risks associated with the existing unsafe toilets by replacing them with modern sanitation facilities designed according to WHO and UNICEF WASH in Schools standards.
The new facilities will provide:
Safe and earthquake-resilient sanitation infrastructure.
Improved hygiene and disease prevention.
Privacy and dignity for girls through dedicated MHM facilities.
Inclusive access for students with disabilities.
Improved attendance and concentration by creating a healthier school environment.
Long-term sanitation infrastructure that can serve future generations of students.
Project Activities
The project will include:
Detailed engineering design and site preparation.
Demolition and safe disposal of the existing damaged toilet structures.
Construction of WHO-standard toilet blocks.
Installation of water storage tanks, plumbing, and handwashing stations.
Construction of septic tanks and drainage systems.
Installation of an incinerator for menstrual hygiene waste management.
Hygiene promotion and handwashing education sessions.
Final inspection, community handover, and maintenance training.

Sustainability
The School Management Committee will establish a Toilet Management Committee responsible for routine maintenance, cleaning, and repairs. Teachers and student child clubs will promote hygiene education and proper use of the facilities. Panchkhal Municipality has expressed its commitment to supporting long-term maintenance through coordination with the school.
Expected Outcomes
Safe sanitation facilities for 308 students and school staff.
Elimination of the use of dangerous earthquake-damaged toilets.
Improved health, hygiene, and school attendance.
Better menstrual hygiene management for 185 female students.
Increased safety, dignity, and accessibility for all children.
A healthy and child-friendly school environment that complies with WHO and UNICEF WASH standards.
Conclusion
The construction of new WHO-standard toilet facilities is an urgent investment in the health, safety, and education of the children of Nava Prativa Secondary School. By replacing the unsafe earthquake-damaged toilets with modern, inclusive, and resilient sanitation facilities, this project will protect students from avoidable risks while promoting dignity, hygiene, and quality education. Through the collaboration of Rotary, the school, the local community, and Panchkhal Municipality, this project will create a lasting impact for current and future generations.
