Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Nigeria

Location: Nigeria

Total Budget: $32,000

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

The Rotary MindBridge Program is a six-month Global Grant initiative designed to improve maternal mental health and psychosocial support in Nigeria through two complementary interventions. In Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), the project will deliver a three-day residential capacity-building programme for 30 frontline health workers on maternal mental health, perinatal distress, WHO mhGAP-informed approaches, Psychological First Aid, referral, and supportive supervision. In Akinyele Local Government Area, the project will support 120 postpartum mothers and 20 Community Birth Attendants through wellbeing workshops, mental health awareness, stigma reduction, referral strengthening, and mother support groups. The need identified is that maternal mental health is often overlooked during routine maternal care, leaving depression, anxiety, and psychosocial distress undetected because frontline workers have limited specialist training, community awareness is low, and referral pathways are weak. The project will meet this need by building practical competencies among health workers, equipping mothers and community birth attendants with knowledge and support, and strengthening referral pathways between communities and health services. Funds will be used for training delivery, facilitation, community sessions, supervision, monitoring, referral mapping, learning materials, and participant protection measures. The timeline begins in October 2026 with inception, partner review, baseline preparation, and workplanning. Capacity building will take place in November and December 2026, community delivery in January and February 2027, and follow-up and endline review in March 2027. Club members will support project coordination, implementation oversight, community engagement, monitoring, and partnership stewardship with technical and institutional partners, including health institutions and state and federal health systems.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
