1. Describe the benefiting community including its location, using any relevant geographic and demographic information (Please be as specific as possible). The benefitting community will be all children from San Salvador with heart disease who will will be considered for treatment at Hospital Bloom in San Salvador. The training aspects of this grant will benefit children with complex heart disease. 2. What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A". With the addition of the new dedicated pediatric cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Hospital Bloom in November 2017, the hospital administration has not yet been able to adjust budgets to support the increase in children being treated. Therefore additional supplemental support is needed to ensure surgeries continue to be completed on a reliable and sustainable basis. Additionally, the Salvadoran surgical and aftercare teams require additional mentoring in the treatment and post-operative care of children with complex heart disease. Lastly, it is essential for a program of this magnitude and complexity to have excellent imaging equipment to adequately diagnose children and to ensure all surgeries have been completed with the best possible outcome. 3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A". Latidos de Esperanza is working with the Hospital Bloom Administration to address the above mentioned needs. They are also working with local businesses to establish sustainable funding for the program in the future. Hospital Bloom has made several substantial contributions to the program and continues to do so on a regular basis. However with the rapid growth of the program they are still in need of and have requested supplemental support during this adjustment period. 1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community. Training of nurses to increase their knowledge and skill level in the treatment of children with heart disease and in particular those with complex heart disease. Purchase of new Philips CX-50 Echocardiogram with TEE and pediatric probes which will help accurately diagnose children as well as ensure that all surgeries are completed with the best possible outcomes. - Two mini VTT missions solely focused on the treatment and aftercare of children with complex heart disease. The VTT teams will consist of only 1 each of a surgeon, anesthesiologist, perfusionist, intensivist, and nurse practitioner. The remaining team members during the mini missions will be from the Salvadoran team. Purchase of supplemental supplies and medications to support the increase in children treated as a result of the opening of the new ICU in November 2017. The need for supplemental supplies and meds mentioned above. Children with complex heart disease are still dying and further training is needed to treat them successfully.. New equipment is needed since the previous electrocardiogram equipment was not purchased new and is currently very old. New up to date equipment is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of children with heart disease. Children with complex hear disease will no longer die because of advanced treatment. The Salvadoran team will increase their knowledge and skills. The parents of these children will finally have hope. Increase in the children able to be treated. With the availability of more beds, children with other illness will be treated on a more timely basis. 2. Please list any cooperating organization(s) or university(ies) involved in the proposed activity(ies). Latidos de Esperanza Foundation will be a cooperating organization and will act as a liaison between the hospital and all partners to help oversee inventory, collect data for monitoring and evaluation and ensure that all children treated receive followup care. 3. Describe how the benefiting community will be involved in the activity(ies) (Provide specific examples). If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A". Rotarians will contribute to and manage the grant funds.Local Rotarians will also help with the collection of data for monitoring and evaluating the project.They will also provide comfort and emotional support to the families of the children being treated. Another responsibility of the host club will be to oversee the delivery of equipment to Hospital Bloom . In addition they will arrange for media coverage of the project and contributions to Hospital Bloom resulting from this publicity. 4. 2. Please describe how the activity(ies) will address the goal(s) of the area(s) or focus. This grant will help to ensure that 200 Salvadoran children with heart disease are treated in their birth country within one year. By saving additional lives this reduces the burden on the local healthcare system. The local team will be able to treat children at an early age thus preventing additional related health issues and fatalities. 1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies). With the additional funding the Hospital will be able to increase the amount of children waiting to be treated.. They will also be able to provide additional mentoring to the aftercare teams to ensure its sustainability especially in the area of complex heart disease. We will be able to fund a state of the art echocardiogram machine with probes, supplemental supplies and medications as well as training the surgical and post operative team of doctors and nurses. 2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes. Latidos de Esperanza is working with Hospital Bloom and local businesses to ensure long term sustainability of the program . This will occur because of additional supplies and training of personnel all related to the additional funding.
